Somebody at the VFW said the VA will pay for Dad's care. Here is what is actually true.

You are not looking for a brochure. You are looking for the gates, the form numbers, who in St. Louis files this for free, and whether you can put a person in the house before a check shows up. Every claim here links to VA.gov or another public source. If a sentence cannot be footnoted, it is not on the page.

The pitch you already heard was simple. Dad served in Korea or Vietnam. He needs help bathing, dressing, or getting from the bed to the chair. Somebody at the post, or a "free benefits consultant" who wanted to move his money, said Aid and Attendance will cover in-home care. Some of that is in the right zip code. Some of it is how those consultants get paid. This desk assumes you will check.

VA Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits are monthly payments added to a VA pension for qualified Veterans and survivors who need help with daily activities such as bathing, feeding, and dressing, or who are housebound. You cannot receive both at the same time. It is cash added to a pension, not a care agency, and only if he passes three gates: wartime service, a need for aid the VA recognizes, and income and net worth inside the congressional limit.

Gate 1. Service

Wartime Veteran, not a dishonorable discharge, with the active-duty days the VA lists. The wartime dates for Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War are on the eligibility page, copied from VA pension eligibility.

Gate 2. Need

Help with daily activities, or housebound. That is a physician's page, VA Form 21-2680, not a story you write in the kitchen.

Gate 3. Money

From December 1, 2025, to November 30, 2026, the net worth limit is $163,699. Care costs can change the income math. That is unreimbursed medical expenses, not a loophole a stranger should sell you.

If any gate is a maybe, the next move is not a company that wants to restructure assets this week. It is a veteran service officer in St. Louis County who files for free.

What to do tonight, before anyone signs anything

Find the DD214. If it is not in the house, write down branch, years, and the war he talks about. A VSO can help reconstruct the rest.
Do not move money, sign an annuity, or pay a fee to file. Accredited VSO help on a VA claim is free.
Write one page: who is in the house at night, what he cannot do alone, and which town you are in. That is for the VSO and, if you hire help, for the care company. It is not a diagnosis.
If he cannot be left alone after a hospital stay, that is a hours-in-the-house problem tonight, not a benefits problem. Benefits can catch up. Presence cannot wait on a claim number.
